The covert operations and drone strikes conducted in Yemen under the Obama administration have been immediately resumed by the Trump administration. As Glenn Greenwald explains in this article from The Intercept, published on January 30th, an 8-year-old girl was killed in the commando raid conducted by the US earlier in the week. She was the sister of the 16-year-old American citizen Abdulrahman Al-Awlaki, who was also killed by the US, in an extra-judicial covert operation in 2011.
These kinds of injustices - typically barely reported on and swiftly forgotten - are unacceptable. While attention is rightfully paid to the human rights violations being committed by the Trump administration closer to American soil, it remains equally important to pay close attention to its actions thousands of miles away. In every case, humans are being affected by their actions; the decisions taken by the administration as to how to treat non-citizens abroad, as well as citizens within the country, all define the administration, as well as America at large.
